Photography is both a hobby and a pastime that almost everyone enjoys and participates in at least once in a while. How serious you get depends on how much time you are willing to spend.
In my case, it evolved more in the digital age as computers and Photoshop became tools of the trade. I took courses years ago through the University of Lethbridge extension branch and learned the basics on an old Edixa Prismat 35 mm that still exists somewhere in my collection. I currently use a Nikon D70S with a variety of lenses and am happy with the results. It has remote control and I use a Nikon SP600 Speed Flash for those shots that need a little help.
